Serie A's Five Team Title Race
In the Serie A right now, there are 5 teams within 6 points of one another at the top of the table. Who will win the Serie A? We discuss that and more this week on Football Latest.
Inter, Napoli, Atalanta, Fiorentina, Lazio.
Serie A has had a fair few scandals in the 21st Century, but it has never really stopped being a thrilling league. Right now, this is how the top of the table looks:
As you can see, Atalanta sit top of the league, having won all of their last 5 games, with Napoli 2 points behind. Inter and Fiorentina both have a game in hand, and if they win those games, Inter will jump to 1st place on goal difference, and Fiorentina will remain 4th, in a good position to pressure the three teams ahead of them. Lazio are equal on points with Fiorentina and also hope to remain in this race. Lets break down this incredible title race team by team, starting with Atalanta.
Atalanta
This team’s success can be attributed to a lot of incredible players, but their manager should probably be seen as the most influential figure of all in their success. Gian Piero Gasperini took over as Atalanta manager in 2016, guiding them to a 4th place finish in the league in the 2016/17 season. This was their first European qualification in 26 years, marking a historic moment for the club. Since then, they have qualified for Europe every season except one, and last season, had an unbelievable Europa League campaign, where they humiliated Liverpool 3-0 at a stunned Anfield, and went on to shock the world again by beating a Leverkusen side 3-0 in the final who were unbeaten across the entire season and on the verge of a treble. In that game, Ademola Lookman showed up with an unbelievable hattrick, the first to ever score one in the final of the competition. This Atalanta side managed to keep Lookman in the summer transfer window, and acquired another superstar at the start of the season, striker Mateo Retegui, who has scored a massive 12 goals this season already in the Serie A alone. despite losing midfielder Koopmeiners to Juventus, they have continued to dominate Italian football, and also sit in a comfortable 13th position in the Champions League’s League Phase. They are strong contenders for this year’s Serie A title.
Lazio
5 days ago, Lazio were going into a tough game hosting Inter Milan, but in great form, having beaten Napoli back to back in the Serie A and Coppa Italia, and after that, beating Ajax 3-1 away from home. But that game at home against Inter Milan changed everything, as they lost 6-0, in a humiliating game. Despite this, Lazio will hope to bounce back today against Lecce, and bring some momentum to their next game against Atalanta. They do still have a lot of positives in addition to their league position, like the fact that they sit top of the Europa League’s League phase, ahead of the pack of 35 other teams in the competition. Their star left-back Nuno Tavares, who is currently on loan from Arsenal, is also currently the Serie A’s top assist provider, with a massive 8 assists so far this campaign. By no means are they out of this title race, but they will need to regain some momentum to stay in the running.
Inter Milan
Inter are the current holders of the Serie A, having won the League last season on an impressive 94 points. Since then, rivals have recruited new signings and built more competitive teams, and Inter have so far managed to keep up with the new competition. With established stars like Dimarco, Barella, Calhanoglu, Sommer, Martinez and Thuram, most people expected Inter to be favourites for this year’s title, and they will go top with a win in their next game, but they will still need to be aware of competition all around them and be careful that they don’t drop unnecessary points, because there are just too many teams around them that will capitalise on any dropped points.
Fiorentina
Having picked up the likes of David de Gea and Moise Kean in the transfer market at the start of this season, Fiorentina are back. After some time away from the sport, David de Gea returned to football (a year after his release from Manchester United) to play for Fiorentina in Italy, and has had some incredible moments already, including an assist for Moise Kean to complete the striker’s hattrick in an impressive 3-1 win against Hellas Verona. Moise Kean himself has had a crazy career, starting his time as a professional player for Juventus, becoming the first player born in the 2000s to score in Europe’s top 5 leagues. He won two league titles with the club, before surprisingly moving to Everton and failing to meet expectations there. He then was successful on loan with PSG, before then being loaned out again back to Juventus, before Juventus then re-signed him permanently. Six months later, he would have moved to Atletico Madrid had he not failed a medical, and then after all of this chaos, he moved to Fiorentina, where he has found great form again. He has scored 9 goals for them in the league so far, and if Fiorentina do well this season, he will be a key part of their success.
Napoli
Finally, we have Napoli. They currently sit second in the league, in a good position to claim another league title. They won the league only 2 seasons ago in the 2022-23 season, where they claimed top spot on 90 points. However, last season, they experienced a massive drop off, going from 1st place to 10th, accumulating 37 less points across the season. However, they are now back in the race for the title, with new players like McTominay and even Lukaku performing brilliantly at the club alongside existing superstars. Surely, Napoli are one of the main contenders for this title, especially if they can maintain this form throughout the season.

Well, both results were extraordinary shocks, especially considering Liverpool's impeccable home record recently and throughout history. The Leverkusen defeat was also a massive shock to the world but I felt humiliation would be a harsh word for a team who went unbeaten in the season up to that point. I appreciate the comment!
Very entertaining read Samuel, not quite sure why Liverpool were “humiliated” 3-0 by a very good & deserving Atalanta & Leverkusen only “beaten” 3-0 but fair enough.
