The 17-year-old wonderkid who just signed for Manchester United is unbelievable.
17-year-old Paraguayan wonderkid Diego Leon will arrive in Manchester to play for the Reds in the summer, and he is a superstar in the making.
Welcome back to Football Latest, where today we introduce a new and exciting talent who has just recently emerged from South America: Diego Leon. Generally, when we talk about a new South American talent, we talk about a player with flair, dribbling and superb technical ability, and while the talent we will be discussing today has this, his defining feature is his physical strength. The 17-year-old left-back from Paraguay has quickly become one of the most sought-after players playing in the continent, and it’s easy to see why when you look at his unique skill-set.
As already mentioned, Leon is not your typical South American wonderkid. South America produces a wealth of young talent, but the Paraguayan star (currently a first-team regular for Cerro Porteño) is already built like a professional. He is a physical beast - almost reminiscent of Hulk when it comes to physical attributes. And speaking of Hulk, am I the only person who didn’t know that Hulk is still playing in the Brazilian top flight?
Back to Leon, he seems like a player who already looks ready to take on the world’s best right-wingers and fly down the wings in a more physical league, which is convenient, since he looks to have just secured a move to Manchester United, joining in the summer. Since his debut for Cerro Porteño in August this year, he’s become a permanent fixture in the first team, and in just a few months, he's already emerged as one of the highest-performing under-18 players outside Europe's top leagues.
His attributes are nothing short of extraordinary. Athletically, Leon boasts impressive strength and blistering pace. He is capable of ruthless tackles, regularly showing a level of aggression that is next-level, whilst not relying on the dark-arts. His physicality is matched by his technical ability, which is unusual for a player with such an imposing presence. His versatility on the ball, combined with his ability to win challenges, has set him apart from his peers.
This reputation as one of the top-performing young players in South America caught the attention of several top European clubs, before Manchester United snapped him up. He could be a massively useful asset to the struggling Reds when he joins in the summer, and Ruben Amorim clearly sees him as a man that could really help to put his system together. You can see why, as with Luke Shaw’s abysmal injury record, he will not be able to be a consistent starter for the Reds under Amorim, and Dalot is not the profile of player that Amorim wants on that side of the pitch.
Overall, Leon is a world-class talent in the making, with a skillset that is hard to find in any area of the world, but wanted by many. His combination of physical strength and technical brilliance is sure to make him a key part of Amorim’s system when he joins United in the summer.
