This weekend, get ready for some thrilling football. Whether you want FA Cup action, Italian or Spanish football, this newsletter has all of the action and drama broken down for you, briefly but clearly. Let’s begin.
Napoli vs Inter Milan
Saturday 1st March
Let’s start with a game that could be a classic. Inter have a one point lead at the top of the Serie A table, and Napoli are the team sat one point behind them. Neither team comes into this game on particularly brilliant form, Napoli with 3 draws and a loss in their last 5 games, including a loss to newly-promoted Como in their last game. Inter are on better form, but despite winning their last two games, their recent 3-0 loss to Fiorentina and loss to Juventus will still be in the back of their minds.
This match-up took place twice in 2024, with both games ending in 1-1 draws. However, both games were filled with tension and drama, so I expect that this game will be too. Lautaro Martinez will be hoping to get back to regular goalscoring form in this game being in a spell of poor form for his standards in 2025 so far. Overall, this should be a thrilling match, and my prediction is a 2-2 draw between the sides.
Manchester City vs Plymouth Argyle
Saturday 1st March
This game is an interesting one for obvious reasons. Let’s look first at Plymouth Argyle. So far in the FA Cup, they have knocked out two Premier League teams, first Brentford on the road, despite their impeccable home form in the Premier League. They moved on to knock out the almost definite Premier League champions Liverpool, and now, they face reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.
While City have been in poor form since November, they still come into this game as heavy favourites. I don’t have a score prediction for this game, because it almost entirely depends on who Pep decides to rest, but I think that City will get a win. Do you think that Plymouth could carry out another giant killing in the tournament known for incredible stories? Let me know:
AS Roma vs Como
Sunday 2nd March
Now, let’s travel back to Italy for our next game. This is an interesting tie because of the form of both of these sides. Starting with the home team, Roma come into this tie with 4 wins and a draw in their last 5 games, including a thrilling 3-2 win against Porto in the Europa League that sent them through on aggregate. However, it is Como’s form that interests me the most.
Como were playing in the Serie B last season, but after promotion to Serie A for the 2024/25 season, the Fabregas-led side have been massively exciting. Their last 5 games are one of the toughest five games in a row that any team can get in Italy. They faced Atalanta, Bologna and Juventus, games that they lost, but more recently, they secured a convincing 2-0 away win at Fiorentina, and most recently of all, defeated Napoli, who would have gone top of the table if not for the loss. What a game this will be between two exciting sides. My prediction is a 2-1 win for Roma.
Atletico Madrid vs Athletic Club
Saturday 1st March
Now, let’s travel to Spain for our next game. This game is between two teams that are unbeaten in their last 5 games, and both teams have come out of their last 5 fixtures with impressive results. Atletico Madrid’s last match was a thrilling 4-4 draw away from home against Barcelona, and in this game, they went 2-0 up in 6 minutes, and then threw away their lead by conceding 4 before the 75th minute. However, Atletico snatched back a draw with goals in the 84th and 93rd minute. They also recently secured a draw with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, so they have dealt well with top sides recently, and being sat 3rd in the table, they could move up to 1st with one more game played over Real and Barcelona if they win this game.
Athletic Club sit 4th in LaLiga, and would go within 2 points of Atletico Madrid with a win. Their most recent result was a 7-1 win against last-placed Real Valladolid, and they have scored 16 goals in their last 5 matches. I think it is safe to say that goalscoring won’t be a problem, even against Atletico Madrid, who generally have a good defensive record. However, Atletico’s attack is probably one of the most underrated in Europe, with a plethora of options upfront, so I am sure that they will outscore Athletic Club, and my prediction is a bold one, and that is a 4-2 Atletico Madrid win.
